The Grateful Dead, formerly the Warlocks [ Back to Gallery ]

Bill Graham was not pleased when he booked the Warlocks to play at his Appeals III benefit to raise money for the San Francisco Mime Troupe (whom had just been arrested for holding shows in Golden Gate Park without a permit) and found out the band had just changed their name to the Grateful Dead. Upon learning of the name change, Bill demanded they change it back to their original name as; the band refused to do comply with Bill's request, so Bill decided to eliminate take their band picture off the poster and ireplace it with the old name "The Warlocks". To my knowledge this is the only Grateful Dead poster from that era with their old name of The Warlocks Hard to imagine when looking at this poster that the next poster for the Fillmore would be BG-1, the start of the famous Fillmore Poster Series that produced some of the best art and music venue of the entire psychedelic sixites!
